When Changing A Hydraulic Filter What Should You Do First

When replacing hydraulic filters, it is important to do it the right way. Not doing this can cause a lot of problems. While the steps are easy to follow, knowing how to replace a filter isn't enough. This article will also explain how to choose the right type of filter and when to replace it.

Replacing a hydraulic filter takes just a few steps:

Lock the machine.
Secure the filter wrench or strap wrench to the bottom of the filter.
Turn the wrench to remove the filter.
After removal, verify that the old seal is completely detached and clean the filter head
Wipe the seal on the new filter with clean oil.
Put the new filter in place, rotate until the seals just touch, then tighten 3/4 turn to finish.
Unlock the machine and operate.
Double check to verify that a good seal has been achieved.
For safety and to prevent equipment damage, the machine must be locked. When removing the filter, you should not grab it from the middle or the top. This can damage the old filter and increase the time it takes to replace the new filter.

Choosing the Right Type of Hydraulic Filter

The type of hydraulic filter chosen as a replacement is usually specified by the manufacturer of the machine/system. Failure to use the correct filter can damage the machine.

When to change the hydraulic filter

In this modern era, most hydraulic filters have indicators that notify you when they need to be replaced. Green means the filter is OK. However, once it turns yellow, it's time to replace the filter. Yellow means the filter is starting to clog. This reduces performance, so it's important to replace the filter when the light turns yellow.

If the light turns red, the hydraulic filter must be replaced immediately. Bypass (not filtering) is happening and the only remedy is to replace the filter as soon as possible.

In addition to looking at indicators, hydraulic filters should be checked every 400 hours during scheduled preventive maintenance. You should check the filter to see if there is any back pressure. If there is hydraulic oil back pressure, replace the filter at this time (although the indicator light is green, it is close to yellow.)

Hydraulic oil monitoring can also determine if the filter needs to be changed. If the oil contamination level is satisfactory, the filter is working properly and does not need to be replaced. If the levels start to change, it may be time to replace the filter.

At Xueyuan Filter, we have the experience and expertise to not only help you choose the right filter for your equipment, but also help you with all your hydraulic system maintenance needs. Contact us today to find out how we can help you!
